Love Part 1: The Backdrop

For us, a small team, the events unfolding across the world over the last few months and years have been disheartening. They have demanded that we reckon with the world, and with ourselves.

We’ve tried to speak to the human cost. To refuse the dehumanization of lives. To name starvation as a tactic of genocide. To resist the flattening of entire people into enemies. And there has been backlash, sometimes from people who are close.

The hardest part isn’t what comes at us. It’s what rises within us: “We’re on the right side. How can they not see it? Never mind, good riddance.”

That’s when we saw it—the righteousness, the resentment, staring back from the mirror. And we remembered that even in resistance, supremacy can sneak in. Being human is messy. And the line between good and evil doesn’t run between nations. It runs through every heart, including ours.

So when we began thinking about what we wanted to make this year, this uncomfortable truth wasn’t just in the background. It was the backdrop. We knew we needed to find a way to be fierce without being resentful. Tender without being passive. Defiant without becoming righteous. We wanted to shape something that could hold it all.
